What is involved in a Buteyko course?

Adults are taught:

• the Buteyko breathing retraining exercises
• optimum breathing methods for everyday living, whether eating, drinking, talking, exercising or sleeping
• how to clear the nose to enable nasal breathing
• the best posture to ensure correct breathing habits
• guidelines for a diet that won't aggravate breathing problems
• when and how exercise and/or sport can help
• how to reduce symptoms such as wheezing and coughing so that reliever medication is not needed as often
• when to approach their GP to discuss reducing medication

Please note that getting the advice of a GP is always encouraged. Many doctors are now very supportive towards patients who make an effort to improve their health without increasing their drug input.

Children:

While the parents are taught about all the above points, there are specially designed exercises for children to encourage a more active, fun approach so that children are motivated and keen to take part.

Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
